A cosmetic box is judged in the hand, before the product is

Beauty packaging is the one category where the outer box carries as much weight as the bottle inside. It is photographed on arrival, opened on camera, and kept on a shelf next to products costing three times as much. The pack has to survive that comparison.

What decides the design here

Three things, in this order: whether the product is visible without opening, whether the surface stays clean in a bathroom, and whether the box still closes after the tenth time it is opened to compare shades. A carton that looks right in a render and scuffs at the fold within a week has failed the only test that matters.

Window cartonPrinted paperboard with a PET window, patched on the inside. Shows the bottle or compact without compromising the print area.
Soft-touch folding boxMatte laminated board. Reads as expensive, but shows fingerprints — worth testing with the actual hand cream before committing.
Plastic boxPET at 0.35–1.15 mm, fully printed or clear. Used for palettes, brush sets and sampler kits where the case is reusable.
Cylinder boxFor mascara, lip products and single-item gift packs. Prints around the full circumference, so artwork can wrap continuously.
Blister trayThermoformed insert that holds a serum bottle or ampoule upright inside a printed sleeve.

Finishes that earn their cost

  • Hot foil on a logo, not a background. A foil block on uncoated board reads as a brand mark; coverage foil reads as a discount line.
  • Spot UV over matte — contrast that survives being photographed under shop lighting.
  • Emboss on the lid edge, where a thumb lands. It is the cheapest way to make a box feel heavier than it is.
  • Pantone matching — a beauty brand’s colour is not “approximately blue”. We print to the number you specify and send a physical proof.

Where regulation sits

Labelling duties under the EU Cosmetics Regulation — ingredient list, period after opening, batch code, responsible person — sit with the brand, not with the packaging supplier. We print the artwork you approve, at the size the panel allows. What we will flag is when the panel you have designed cannot hold the mandatory text at a legible size, which is better discovered at proof stage than at customs.

For inner trays that touch the formula directly, the ink system matters. Tell us it is a direct-contact part and we will specify low-migration inks rather than the standard set.

A request we get often: “same box, three colours, three markets.” That is three print runs, not one — but the tooling is shared, so the second and third colourways cost less than the first.

Send the product and the shelf it sits on
